We Moved to the Beach and Here’s what happened.

father-656734_1920Jason and I have both lived in the Philadelphia area our entire lives. I think the long, cold, dreary winters started to really bother us the last few years. We were sick of being inside for 4 months straight and neither of us are into winter sports like skiing or snowboarding. Jason has been pestering me for years about moving somewhere warm and I just wasn’t ready until now. All of a sudden something just clicked and I realized that I actually have a choice! Nobody was forcing me to live in the Northeast, cooped up inside for half the year, not enjoying nature and sunshine.

We both love to be near the water and outside in nature so we started talking about moving to the beach in Florida. And just two years later, here we are! We traded in our large suburban home for a townhouse on the bay just one block from the beach. No more yard work or snow shoveling for us. The first thing we noticed was that if one of us was having a bad day, we could take a short walk to watch the sunset over the Gulf of Mexico, and all of our worries would just melt away. It’s been so healing for us to live in such a beautiful place, and even though our home is much smaller and simpler, we are actually happier than ever. Our weekends are free to explore new outdoor activities and it’s a much slower pace of life that we are enjoying. If you don’t like the weather where you live or just want a fresh new city, be like us and change it up!

It only takes a month or two to adjust, which is nothing in the long run. Living here made us realize that one of the best kinds of “therapy” is just sitting on the beach and staring out over the water. Actually, there is a great book titled “Blue Mind” by Wallace J. Nichols that talks about the remarkable effects of water on our health and well-being. blue mindSide note…You can get the audio book for free on Hoopla through your library. Here’s a video on how to register your free hoopla account.  “Blue Mind” reveals some truths about the many benefits of being in, on, under or simply near water. Some of the benefits include: increased creativity, productivity, and calmness while also decreasing anxiety. I definitely have to agree. It’s certainly not a cure-all but I can totally see changes in our lives now that we are near water at all times. If you want to move somewhere warm and/or near the water, let us know where you are considering and for how long you have been wanting to make the change. We would be glad to share more of our story.
